Abuja Sinks: Residents blast Wike over floods, accuse FCT Administration of selling green areas

The recent flooding in Abuja following a torrential rain at the weekend has continued to generate public outrage.

Parts of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, had been submerged in water, with cars and houses destroyed by the flood.

Not happy with the development, some residents have called out the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, alleging he sold all the green areas to developers and did not make provision for effective drainage systems.

In a video on X, parts of Wuse 2, including Ademola Adetokunbo Crescent, the bridge near City Park, a plaza and several vehicles, were seen submerged in floodwater.

Other areas, including Wuse Zone 1, Katampe, Darrumi, Gwarinpa, Gaduwa and Gudu, were also affected by the flood.

The downpour had left motorists and residents stranded until the floodwaters receded.

Many FCT residents who commented on the situation on X alleged that the Minister of the FCT had abandoned the Abuja Master Plan.

An X user, known as Chude, wrote: “Abuja is sinking. The planned capital of Nigeria, one of three purpose-built capitals in West Africa and the newest there, was never meant to flood. Standards were high, and every detail was considered in the master plan.

But today, Katampe, Wuse, Gariki, Lugbe, Galadimawa and others are flooding. What is going on? What happened to Abuja?

Major drainages are blocked, sewage spills out daily, canals have been narrowed for estates, and green areas have been sold to estate companies by this government. This is the story of the capital that was never meant to flood”.

Similarly, another X user, Everest, said: “Abuja had a master plan until Obio Akpor Hitler and his boys entered the city. Now flood everywhere.”

Mohammed Jummal wrote on X: “The flooding in Abuja should be a serious concern for all of us. I honestly don’t think I’ve ever seen it this bad, especially with flooding now occurring in areas where we’ve never experienced it before. This is worrying and deserves urgent attention”.

On his part, the spokesperson of the Nigerian Democratic Congress, Theo Abu Agada, wrote on X: “This is the evil the APC has done to our city. We have been complaining about Wike selling our green areas to developers, and some people here say we were hating on him.”
