The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) has extended its petrol sales discount at its retail stations nationwide as part of efforts to cushion the impact of rising global crude oil prices on Nigerians.
The company said the discount, initially introduced on October 1 to commemorate Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary, will now run until October 31, 2026.
NNPC said the decision followed the Federal Government’s efforts to provide relief to households and businesses amid elevated global crude oil prices triggered by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
In a statement on Friday, the company’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Andy Odeh, said NNPC recognised the pressure higher petrol prices were placing on Nigerians, particularly through increased transportation and business operating costs.
“We recognise that higher petrol prices affect everyday life, from the cost of commuting to the expenses of running a business,” the company said.
According to NNPC, the discount is intended to provide direct relief to customers during the period of heightened global market uncertainty.
The company said the extension also followed a statement by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, on October 8, 2026, on measures to cushion the effect of rising fuel prices.
NNPC, however, stressed that the initiative should not be interpreted as a return to petroleum subsidy.
The company said the discount applies exclusively to NNPC Retail outlets and does not establish a uniform national pump price or alter the market-based pricing framework governing petroleum products.
“While this is a customer relief initiative, it does not represent the reintroduction of petroleum subsidy,” NNPC said.
The national oil company added that it remained committed to ensuring reliable petrol supply while collaborating with the Federal Government and other stakeholders to reduce the burden of rising fuel costs on Nigerians.
It urged members of the public to disregard interpretations suggesting that the discount amounted to a restoration of fuel subsidy.
NNPC said its priority was to provide practical support to consumers while maintaining commercially responsible operations, adding that it would continue to communicate clearly about the scope and duration of its customer initiatives.
The company also assured Nigerians of its commitment to reliable product supply and responsible customer service, while appreciating customers for their continued patronage.
