The Federal Ministry of Education has reaffirmed its partnership with the National Identity Management Commission, NIMC, to strengthen digital identity management for learners across Nigeria.

The initiative was announced in a statement issued by the Federal Ministry of Education after a meeting between Education Minister, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, and NIMC Director-General, Engr. Bisoye Coker-Odusote.

According to the ministry, the collaboration is aimed at improving identity management and providing reliable education data for planning and policy implementation.

The ministry said the National Learners’ Identification Number, LIN, has already been integrated with the National Identification Number, NIN, through the Nigeria Education Management Information System, NEMIS, covering about 80 million learners across early childhood, primary, secondary, technical, vocational and tertiary institutions.

“A credible national identity system is one of the most critical foundations for effective governance, quality education and sustainable economic growth,” Alausa said.

Speaking at the meeting, Coker-Odusote said the NIMC Act, 2026 provides the legal framework for Digital Public Infrastructure, DPI, and Public Key Infrastructure, PKI, which are expected to support secure digital identity management and electronic transactions.

She disclosed that more than 120 million Nigerians have been enrolled in the national identity database, adding that the commission has expanded its identity verification services to government agencies, financial institutions and telecommunications operators.

The ministry said the partnership will support student enrolment, scholarship administration, examination management and certificate authentication through secure digital identity systems.
