The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas has withdrawn the Counter Subversion Bill he sponsored following a public backlash.

The speaker announced the withdrawal on Wednesday in a statement issued by his spokesperson, Musa Krishi.

The bill which Nigerian s kicked against, contains some draconian consequences that will infringe on the rights of Nigerians who refuse to sing the national anthem or demand cessation

Abbas had justified the introduction of the bill, stating that it’s a global practice, he however, hours after, issued another statement, withdrawing the bill.

“The speaker acknowledges the significance of the concerns raised and the attention the Bill has garnered, reaffirming that he will never support any action that might disrupt the peace and unity of the nation,” the statement by Mr Krishi reads in part.
