Nigeria has officially commenced the use of the old National Anthem, ”Nigeria We Hail Thee”, which was first used at Independence in 1960,

Shortly three years after, in 1980, in its quest for true independence, Nigeria abandoned the old Anthem and developed a new one.

The new National Anthem of Nigeria, “Nigeria We Hail Thee,” has now been sung for the first time today, May 29, 2024 during a joint session of the National Assembly after the President Tinubu signed it into law.

However, the government has under heavy criticism for returning the country to the old Anthem with many describing the move as misplaced priority.

The law had gone through heavy debate at the House of Representatives on May 23, the Senate on its part, hurriedly passed the law despite opposition from Nigerians.

The Attorney General of the Federation, AGF and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi had, on Monday appealed to the National Assembly to put halt the bill, warning that the reversal should not be a subject of legislative debate alone.

Despite all opposition, the President on Wednesday assented to the bill on Wednesday, begging the question why the speed of assent without scrutiny.
