Some inmates of a federal correctional centre have escaped custody following the destruction of the holding facility by a rainstorm.

The perimeter fence of the facility located at old Suleja in Niger State was destroyed by the late-night storm.

A significant number of inmates reportedly escaped from the facility

The intense rain and winds not only caused structural damage to the building but also breached the inner fencing, giving inmates access to escape their confinement.

Authorities say a combined team of security forces has been mobilised to track down the fleeing prisoners.

The operatives said they are focusing on strategic locations and identified hotspots within Suleja town.

Calm has, however, been restored to Suleja town, as the search to locate and recover the escaped inmates continue.
