Ebola Alert: NCDC raises vigilance as Kenya confirms imported case

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and observe preventive measures to reduce the risk of infection and transmission.

This is as the agency says it has increased national surveillance and preparedness measures following the confirmation of an imported case of Ebola in Kenya.

The case, caused by the Bundibugyo virus, is linked to an ongoing outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), raising concerns about the disease’s potential international spread.

In a statement, the NCDC said that as of October 6, 2026, no case of Ebola has been confirmed in Nigeria.

However, the agency said it was reviewing the risk posed to Nigeria and strengthening preparedness measures in collaboration with relevant government authorities and partners.

The NCDC advised members of the public to practise regular hand hygiene by washing their hands with soap and water or using an alcohol-based hand sanitiser.

The agency also warned against contact with the blood or other body fluids of anyone who is ill, as well as contact with the body of a person who has died from an unknown illness.

It further advised Nigerians to avoid handling sick or dead wild animals and to refrain from eating raw or poorly cooked bushmeat.

The NCDC urged anyone who develops symptoms suggestive of Ebola or becomes ill after a potential exposure to seek medical attention promptly at a recognised health facility.

The agency said continued vigilance and early reporting remain critical to ensuring that any potential case is detected and managed promptly.

Ebola is a severe viral disease that can cause serious illness and death, with transmission occurring primarily through direct contact with the blood or body fluids of an infected person or animal.
