The Ogun State Government has declared Thursday a public holiday to mark the 2026 Isese Day.
The state first set aside August 20 as Isese Day in 2023, following a resolution by the Ogun House of Assembly and approval by Governor Dapo Abiodun.
In a statement signed by the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, on Wednesday, the holiday gives traditional religion worshippers the chance to honour their ancestors and observe rites rooted in Yoruba spirituality.
The government noted that recognising the celebration highlights the role of culture and traditional institutions in shaping the state’s identity, and the decision reaffirms its commitment to protecting Yoruba culture, traditions and heritage.
It further stated that supporting such observances helps strengthen social cohesion across Ogun’s diverse communities.
“The observance of Isese Day reflects the administration’s recognition of the important role of culture and traditional institutions in preserving the state’s identity and strengthening social cohesion.”
Beyond religious observance, Isese Day is expected to foster unity among adherents, promote indigenous practices, give traditional worshippers equal recognition with other faiths and allow other residents to learn about and respect Yoruba heritage.
The government urged residents to use the holiday to promote peace, tolerance and cultural pride.
