The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has cautioned tertiary institutions across the country against using their internal portals to pressure or persuade candidates, particularly those highly ranked on the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS), to switch from their preferred programmes to less-subscribed ones.

The examination body described the practice as unethical and manipulative, alleging that it is designed to create space for institutions’ preferred candidates to rise in the admission ranking order, thereby undermining the merit-based system established to ensure transparency and fairness in admissions.

In a statement issued by its Public Communication Adviser, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, JAMB reminded institutions and candidates that all admission processes in Nigeria must be conducted strictly through CAPS, the official platform for ensuring accountability, transparency, and equal opportunity in admission placements.

“Any change of programme or admission activity carried out outside the JAMB CAPS is unauthorised, unethical, and ultimately detrimental to the affected candidates,” the Board stated.

JAMB noted that any institution engaging in such “backdoor manoeuvres” demonstrates a clear intent to deceive and shortchange candidates, warning that such acts will not be tolerated. Candidates have been strongly advised to ignore any invitation or request from institutions urging them to make programme changes via unofficial or internal channels.

The Board further explained that if any candidate, having been influenced by an institution, later effects a change of programme on CAPS, such a decision will be considered voluntary. Consequently, JAMB said it would not be held responsible for any adverse consequences resulting from such actions.

According to preliminary investigations, a university in the South-West and another in Abuja have been identified as engaging in the unethical practice. JAMB disclosed that it has commenced regulatory measures to address the issue and safeguard the integrity of the admission process.

Reiterating its commitment to fairness and transparency, JAMB urged all candidates to remain vigilant and to carry out all admission-related activities exclusively through the CAPS portal.

“The Board reaffirms its unwavering commitment to ensuring that all qualified candidates are treated with fairness, equity, and transparency in the 2025 admission exercise and beyond,” the statement added.
